Eagles Preview
Philadelphia enters Sunday's game coming off of an exciting win over the New Orleans Saints last week in the Big Easy 15 - 12. The Eagles were playing on a short week after a bad loss to the Falcons in a Monday night affair and struggled throughout the game until the 4th quarter where they put up 15 points including a 2-point conversion to seal the deal against the Saints.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is 1 - 3 in his career against the Bucs, has thrown for 772 passing yards, going 72 of 102 with 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions this season with an 84.9 passer rating. He's also had 34 carries for 143 yards rushing with one touchdown and two fumbles.
Hurts went 29 of 38 for 311 yards last week against the Saints with no touchdowns and one interception. His favorite target, DeVonta Smith, suffered a concussion last week against the Saints and is listed as questionable this week and he did not practice on Thursday. Smith has caught 21 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown on the season and his absence would be a blow to the Eagles who may also be without A.J. Brown, who also did not practice on Thursday and is listed as questionable. Brown has a hamstring injury that has kept him out of the last two games.
That puts extra pressure on Saquon Barkley who has 351 yards this season on 63 carries (5.1 average) with four touchdowns. Barkley is averaging 117 yards per game. Last week against the Saints, Barkley put up 147 yards on 17 carries, including one for 65 yards, with two touchdowns.
The Eagles defense is led by Linebacker Zach Braun who has 37 total tackles with two sacks on the season. Along with Reed Blankenship and his two interceptions and 20 tackles, the Eagles defense will need to stiffen up even more to compensate for a possible slog fest if their offense comes into the game hobbled.
Buccaneers Preview
I wrote about the Bucs last week when they played the Broncos and made a bit of an off-handed joke that the Bucs had started the season 2 - 0 and needed to avoid losing game 3, which they had done the previous three years. Well, make that four years in a row the Bucs have lost game 3 after starting 2 - 0. I think we have an official trend.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield comes into the game with a passer rating of 110.7, good for 12th in the league and has thrown for 637 yards on 61 of 82 passing with six touchdowns and two interceptions. Mayfield has been sacked 13 times and that's the 3rd most in the league.
Mayfield has two of the best wideouts in the league in Chris Godwin and Mike Evans. Godwin is 21 for 25 with 253 yards and three touchdowns on the season and Evans is 10 of 15 for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Both receivers have big-play potential that has been hampered by the front line not giving Mayfield enough time to throw down field.
The Bucs defense is ranked 28th in the league in total defense giving up 371.3 yards per game and allowing six touchdowns. They are 24th in passing defense with 233.7 yards per game and no touchdowns and 25th in rushing defense giving up 137.7 yards per game. That defense will need to stiffen substantially if it is to keep Saquon Barkley in check.
How I Use Rithmm Models for my Broncos vs Buccaneers AI Prediction
Both teams are tied for first in their respective divisions. Both teams come into this game 2 - 1 and both teams are coming off of a loss. With the Eagles potentially beset by offensive injuries at wideout and the Bucs lingering at the bottom of the defensive barrel, you have to wonder how much they will rely on the rushing of Barkley and Hurts. Even Todd Bowles, Head Coach of the Bucs, said this week "We need to get it going on in the interior when the outside guys get a good rush...We've got to get to the quarterback better."
- The Eagles are 2 - 8 against the spread in their last 10 games
- The Eagles are 2 - 4 against the spread in their last 6 games against the Bucs
- The Bucs are 7 - 3 against the spread in their last 10 games
- The Bucs are 2 - 7 against the spread in their last 9 games played in week 4
This line opened with the Eagles laying -1 (DK) and has fluctuated between -1.5 and -2.5 for most of the week, settling back to -1.5 at most books (you can find a -1 at a few as of this writing). All three of my Rithmm models have come out strong on the Eagles to cover this spread and more. The money is setting heavy to the favorites here with a 65% bet split. On one level, you'd like to see this line move out a little more with that kind of split, but on another level, you can see that the books may not be ready to commit to that with the Eagles injuries up in the air for this weekend.
It's these moments when the Rithmm App does exactly what it is supposed to do. It becomes another metric for you to use to help you determine your betting strategy, and in this case, with the models so much in agreement, I'll be taking the Eagles -1.5.
